Geek Squad.... Are They Worth Your Time?

I have had the experience of receiving many service calls after Geek Squad has been out to see one of my newer customers. Usually in my experience Geek Squad has "taken care of the problem" on the customer's machine and weeks later they experience the same error or problem that they had previously or a whole new set of problems will arise. I think the concept of Geek Squad is excellent, but as I read the customer reviews on this company, I cannot help but wonder if their services might be overpriced while their service underdelivers. Perhaps having a national company specialize in quick fixes for your computer is only "ideal" but not practical. Imagine having to train thousands of technicians on how to diagnose computer issues.
If you simply go on to Google and search for "Geek Squad Reviews" you will find (depends on where you are searching, the results I am about to discuss are results from the Denver, Colorado area many negative reviews. As I look at it, I see many 1 star and 3 star reviews. Internet reviews cannot be the only thing you rely on when doing your research but many of those reviews seem to be genuine.
Not only is there several negative reviews in "Google Places" but there are several complaints posted to sites like www.pissedconsumer.com, www.reportyourcomplaint.com, www.consumerist.com. Many of the posts and complaints that I have reviewed question Geek Squad's ability and also their prices. It seems that many believe that Geek Squad is too expensive and ineffective. After reviewing many of the Geek Squad reviews and blog posts that I have, the most interesting was this post from a "former employee" of Geek Squad.

"Geek Squad is a good company to work for. They have a nice ideology and cult-like attitude. However from my experiences working for GS, I have found that a majority of their Agents are rather ignorant about real tech work. Most of them only know how to run GeekSquad's MRI CD and Customizer. Hardly any of them even use ESD (electrostatic discharge) equipment. And don't believe the BS they tell you when they say "Our floor is specially treated for ESD". That would only matter if you are wearing heel straps, which they don't. Their prices are far overpriced. In some cased they charge double what their competitors charge. There are some very competent Agents, but most of them are from the pre-BBY buyout.

"Quality - We have an entire quality team whose responsibility is to ensure that our Agents have properly repaired the customers unit."

Was put into place after NUMEROUS complaints from Precincts and customers from the poor quality.

FACTS
1. Data Recovery is not a big deal. They hook it up to any random desktop, run a recovery program (license costs about 1k a year), and click recover.
2. They outsource some of the repairs via a remote access application (AKA AJU or Agent Johnny Utah). These people are in countries that have no similar privacy laws that are in the US. So in other words, your computer with your saved bank passwords, government contacts, ETC; are being accessed by "Bob" in India, Pakistan, and various other countries around the world.
3. An Agent's RPT or Revenue Per Transaction is around $250.00. Which means if you are spending less than that, their goal is to get you to spend more.
4. Geek Squad hires people based on their Salesmen and Customer Service skills before they hire on their Technical Prowess. They would rather Train a salesman to be a tech than train a tech to be a salesman."

Now that is supposedly straight from the horses mouth. I of course cannot offer any kind of opinion on Geek Squad as I have not done business with them, and do not know what their services entail. My only experience with this company has been to review their website and the reviews mentioned in this post. I am only bringing their reviews to the attention of this site for those who are considering using Geek Squad in Denver.
Based on what I have seen, if you are looking for Denver Computer Repair, it might be better to check out some of our local, smaller and well reviewed computer repair technicians in Denver. I do not want to make specific recommendations as I own my own computer repair company in Denver and of course I would tout my skills over my competitors.
